Since 1998, the Chico Mendes Reforestation Project has been planting trees and collecting seeds for the reforestation of the communal forest areas surrounding Cantel, with the support foreign volunteers, language students, as well as Guatemalan friends. Through these collective efforts the community has been able to maintain this project in benefit of Cantel and of the world. The Ixim Ulew Rural Language School donates its profits to the Chico Mendes Project to carry out following activities: the collection of seeds and planting soil, preparation of the soil for planting, preparation of seed beds, seedling cultivation and care, transplantation of seedlings in the communal forests of the Cantel mountains, preparation of organic fertilizer to nourish the seedlings, environmental education, garbage recycling, and more.
Language school students are invited and encouraged to volunteer with the Chico Mendes Project during their stay in Pachaj. Other volunteer opportunities are available by special arrangement, depending on the student’s individual interest.
